Dead or Alive slot review
Dead or Alive is one of the most famous high-volatility slots ever made. Released by NetEnt in 2009, this Wild West game is simple on the surface — five reels and nine lines — but its free spins with sticky wanted-poster wilds can produce huge wins. Its success led to Dead or Alive 2 in 2019.
Dead or Alive at a glance
| Provider | NetEnt |
|---|---|
| Release | 2009 |
| Reels × rows | 5 × 3 |
| Paylines | 9 |
| RTP | about 96.8% |
| Volatility | Very high |
| Features | 12 free spins with a 2x multiplier and sticky wilds |
The reels are set in a dusty frontier town: cowboy hats, boots, whisky glasses, sheriff badges and crossed guns, plus wanted posters of five outlaws, which act as wilds. The music and sound effects are kept minimal, which adds to the tension of every spin.
How to play Dead or Alive
The game has 5 reels, 3 rows and 9 fixed paylines. Choose your stake and spin. The crossed-guns scatter is the key to the bonus.
Dead or Alive bonus features
- Wanted wilds. The posters substitute for all symbols except the scatter.
- Free spins. Three or more crossed-guns scatters award 12 free spins, and all wins in the round are doubled.
- Sticky wilds. Every wild that lands during the free spins stays on the reels until the end of the round.
- Retrigger. New scatters during the free spins add extra spins.
RTP, volatility and winnings
The RTP of Dead or Alive is about 96.8%, and the volatility is very high: long series of spins without notable wins are normal, while a free spins round with several sticky wilds can pay thousands of times the stake.
Tips for playing Dead or Alive
- Keep the stake small relative to your budget — you may need many spins to reach the free spins.
- The value of the bonus depends on how many wilds stick early in the round, so results vary a lot from one bonus to another.
- If you want more features, try Dead or Alive 2 with its three free spins modes.
Is Dead or Alive worth playing?
Dead or Alive is a cult classic for players who enjoy high risk and the excitement of a single big bonus. If you prefer steady play, choose a low-volatility slot such as Starburst instead.
